SASQUATCH! Tales of Terror from the Armstrong Highway

As you know, I am a collector of stories of all kinds, and for many years people have come to me with them. Well, here are a few chilling tales which have been waiting in the wings for a long time. Hope you enjoy and share.

Kill Spot

One night two men were hunting moose on their native land. After targeting and shooting the animal, and allowing time for it to die, he and his cousin found "the monster" was much too large to load up, so they left to get some help from family. Upon their return they could hear something weeping and crying in the woods. The unsettling and mysterious noise kept up as they began to move the body, growing into a loud and unnerving whoop. They worked as fast as they can feeling any moment the cause of the whooping would reveal itself in their midst. They soon felt the night air turn to cold terror, penetrating their bodies now, as they heard the heavy tromp, cracking sticks underfoot getting closer and closer like a clock ticking down to an alarm. They were told to ignore it hurriedly and to do whatever you have to do to get it on the truck. At this point it didn't matter how they got it in the box, they jumped in the vehicle with their catch, afraid with hair standing on end, leaving the kill spot in the red tail light dust.

Dark Animal

It was late one night when a man was traveling from Thunder Bay to Armstrong. The stretch is about 3 hours give or take, and most times is uneventful. Surrounded by dense forest, a few rivers and lakes, as well as towers and power lines, there isn't all that much to see. Well this night the man saw more than he ever wanted to. It was late, the red eye hours of the morning. As he passed the Kopka River, (a place known by many historically where Sa'be has been seen and heard) in the distance he saw what looked to be a moose in the headlights. Upon drawing closer to the dark animal, he honked the horn to get off the side of the highway, should it decide to walk out and destroy his vehicle. It stood up from sage picking, and revealed itself to be a massive, tall dark man. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. With two giant steps the creature vanished into the woods.

The Eyes

One night 3 elder Natives were hunting north of Armstrong. As some time passed they came across a swampy area which would be good to find moose. They shined their spotlight across the swamp, slowly panning it to not miss anything. Ah ha! There were eyes reflecting back at them. One of them readied his rifle, and before he could even take aim, the creature moved breaking the silence of night with a splash. Suddenly a huge stone came hurling overhead and hit the ground with an enormous thud. The men saw the huge rock and immediately forgot the idea of hunting making a break for the truck.

Don't Whistle At Night

As the story goes, there is a place on the Armstrong highway called the Kopka River, situated between Kopka Lake and Pishidgi Lake, which is over 2 hours up Highway 527. The highway crosses the river, where I am told historically many people have seen and heard Sa'be. One of the old Native legends I am told is that if you go there at night, and whistle to the Kopka Mountain, a large, flat mountain (which I am sure is a sacred Native place) where Lake Nipigon Natives fastened for centuries. If one whistles at the mountain at night be advised from old Native legend: If one does this, he will be gutted and left on the spot by the creature. So never go alone.
