Terror in the Trees
Stories of the Thunderbird have been told over the years in the Thunder Bay region, but this is the first time I have heard of something like this...
In the early 2000's two children were playing paintball on their reservation on Lake Nipigon and had unknowingly wandered onto a burial ground. The calm evening soon broke into a massive windstorm, which only effected the two children. It was said the sound of rushing wind enveloped the two with no visible trace of leaves being blown or trees bending under the stress of the heavy wind.Confused as to what was happening around them, the two were startled by a terrifying sight. A "giant owl" was perched between the trees watching with a haunting, stern, icy glare; wings folded. Its eyes were absolutely horrifying. They wasted no time in escaping the woods and the sight of the great owl. The children would always remember this, and years later it was found that their playground was on a burial site.
It is thought they had disturbed an ever vigilant protector, or sacred messenger sent to warn them of trodding without concern over ancient bodies. In some beliefs they are associated with ghosts, while in others, they deliver warnings of broken tribal taboos. Sometimes even death messengers. I have also heard similar stories to this as if they hoot at you or even say you're name it is a bad omen.
The children did not know what they had done, but certainly these days are very aware of their footsteps, and still haunted by its cold stare. Lesson learned. It is also stated that "There are people buried all over the place there, and it's worrisome to have to dig anywhere on that land."
(I have heard it's size was in 10's of feet. When I get to talk to the man himself I will fill in the information.)
